Ways to Tell Fake Money

Though the union bank cards and international credit cards are being used now, the primary method of payment among most residents is still cash. Only the local Chinese currency of Renminbi (yuan) is accepted in Beijing. Yuan come in paper notes, and are available in the following denominations: 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100.

Here I will introduce some simple ways of how to spot fake money when given change somewhere. The following methods apply to RMB5,10,20,50,100.

Step 1 – Collar Scratch. This is the most effective way to spot fake cash. There is a “Great Man” on different bills of 1yuan, 5yuan, 10yuan, 20yuan, 50yuan, and 100yuan. Scratch the Man's collar and feel those little bumps. You can always scratch the collar of legitimate money and you can feel texture bumps in the paper. Normally, for new bills that have not been folded as much, you can even hear the bumps as you use the tip of your nail to scratch the collar. Some older, more used cash may make it harder to scratch while most fake money is just like regular paper, which has no texture bumps for you to scratch. Be more careful with this and try to use a sharp tip of something to scratch it to see if you can feel the bumps.

Step 2 –Strip Check. This method needs the use of a light source to check. All big bills except for the 1yuan bills have a strip of paper inserted into the bill which tends to be on the left side. Take a 100yuan bill for example, on the strip of paper you can see the number 100 and the symbol of RMB in really small words. Check other methods for verification if there is no strip on there.

Step 3- Watch the Water Mark. It is best to always check for the water marks on the bill. If you hold bill to some light, you should be able to see a faint watermark on the up and right corner of the bill. Make sure the watermark matches the bill. Some fake money techniques are to bleach the 5yuan or 10yuan bill and imprint the larger bill number on so it has the watermark left. This technique leaves the 5yuan or 10yuan watermark on it, which makes the 20, 50, or 100yuan bill illegitimate. If you are unsure of what watermark goes with what, check the other bills to make sure.

Step 4 – Check Red and Blue Hairs. There are red and blue thin hairs on newer bills. You can see it mostly on the blank side of the bill with some mini circles scattered there. It is very small thin pieces of hair that are colored red and blue strands of threads. Check to see if you can tell a few hairs there, which makes the bill legitimate.

There are few other methods that you can use to spot the fake money: if the bill rips too easily, than most likely it is not real. If the bill feels too hard, just feels like regular paper when holding it, than it is most likely fake as well.

There are also other ways that are not listed here to detect fake money, post them in the comments if you would like to.

I heard that the fake money will be confiscated by the bank. Whoever encounters the counterfeit money should stop passing it on again and destroy it.
